hand
baste this onto the background fabric inside the heart. Instructions
below.

(52cm/20" sq) for 'I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat'
Fabric
- Class Pattern OPTION B -
Int-Exp) Two pieces 50cm x 75cm (20" x
29") for 'Leaf Panel'
Fabric
- Own pattern You are welcome to
bring your own pattern to my class however please ensure the 'top',
applique fabric is a firm, tight weave such as a batik, and prepare by
marking the design and basting to the background fabric as instructed
below.
Good
contrast is required between the two fabrics. The top/appliqué
fabric
should be a fine, tight weave such as a batik. Textured or
tone-on-tones; no
plains. Wash
and iron
fabrics well, checking they are colour-fast. Trace the pattern onto the
top/appliqué
fabric . I recommend the 'fine'
blue wash-away marker, lines must
be fine and clearly visible. If using a
dark fabric press the design through
using 'dress-makers carbon'. Chalk markers are not suitable as they
wear off
too quickly. Hand baste
top/appliqué to
background fabric, inside the pattern where possible.
*Note:
Do not mark the dotted 'quilting' lines, just the outlines.
*Note: Leave the appliqué
fabric in one piece
- do not cut out around the pattern.
Thread
that matches the
top/appliqué fabric.
Normal 'sewing thread is usually suitable. Silk is lovely to use if you
are an
experienced stitcher but the most important thing is to match the
fabric
colour. This will be discussed in the class so bring a variety if you
like.
Needles.
Bring the usual needle you like to stitch with and long, fine needles
if you
have them - Straws or Milliners can work well, I like a Straw #8. A
small eye
is preferable but it must be suitable for the thread. This will be
discussed in
class.
Scissors.
Small very sharp 'nail scissors' or embroidery scissors. They must cut
cleanly
and sharply right to the tip of the point. Small 'nose hair' scissors (!) with the
rounded 'tips' from the chemist/drug store or The Body Shop are great
if you
can find them. Check they cut fabric right to the tip before purchase .
Small box/holder with a lid for your cut-offs.
Spectacles
if you need them.
General hand sewing
requirements. A
couple of pins, unpicker, pencil, ruler etc. A small box that will hold
all
your bits & pieces is helpful.
Basic Sewing
Supplies
Pencil, Ball point
pen, Pins, Quick Unpick, General hand sewing requirements.
Spectacles if required.
Heart Skill Tester -
Pre-class
Preparation (Heart
will be appliqued in class.)

Heart Skill
Tester (A heart approx 4" across, with a 'bite' out of it.)
Two
pieces of practise/skill tester fabric approx 8" square, contrasting colours. I
suggest
a medium or light for the top/appliqué so it is easier to trace
the design to.
Wash and iron fabrics well, checking they are colour-fast.
Trace Heart diagram above onto
the top/appliqué fabric, using any method you wish as long as it
is clearly
visible. I suggest the fine, blue 'wash-away marker'. Do not cut
out.
Baste this fabric to the
background, stitching inside the heart approx 1/4" away from the marked
line, but not on the lines. Use light but contrasting thread, and rough
stitches about 3/4" long are acceptable.
Thread
that matches the
appliqué fabric.
Needles.
Bring the usual needle you like to stitch with and long, fine needles
if you
have them - Straws or Milliners can work well. I like
a Straw #8.

Preparation for patterns -
'I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat' and 'Leaf Panel'
Prepare
applique.
1. Choose a
pattern.
'I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat' (Beginner or
Intermediate),' Leaf Panel' (Intermediate or Advanced stitcher) or one
of your
own.
2. Choose
fabric.
There are only two fabrics required, a top/appliqué and a
background, and I
suggest cotton for both. Good contrast is required between the two and
the
top/appliqué fabric should be a fine, tight weave such as a
batik.
Tone-on-tones are good for the appliqué as they help to hide
your stitches,
anything you like that is a good contrast with the appliqué will
be suitable
for the background. Wash and
iron fabrics
well, checking they are colour-fast.
'I
Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat' requires a fat quarter of each fabric - or 52cm/20"
square.
'Leaf
Panel' requires 50cm x 75 cm / 20" x 29" of each fabric.
*Note: The appliqué fabric
should be a fine, tight weave such as a batik which will minimise
fraying.
3. Trace the pattern onto the appliqué fabric using any
method you
wish. I recommend the 'fine'
blue wash-away marker but the
lines must be fine and clearly visible.
Allow at least an inch of spare fabric all around the design. If you are using a dark fabric I suggest
pressing the design through using 'dress-makers carbon'. Chalk markers
are not
suitable as they wear off to quickly.
*Note: Do not mark the
dotted 'quilting' lines at
this stage, just the outlines.
*Note:
Leave the appliqué fabric in one piece - do not cut out the
pattern.
4. Position carefully and baste this fabric to the background, preferably
inside the
pattern, approx 1/4" - 1/2" away from the marked lines.
Use light coloured but contrasting thread and
rough stitches about 3/4" long are acceptable. Don't be too particular
with the basting.
